The Calton was a busy area back then. In 1859 the Glasgow Post Officer Directory listed over 60 businesses. They included 6 wine & spirit merchants, a dress maker, a china merchant, 4 tin smiths, a pawn broker, 4 victuallars, 4 drapers, 2 milliners, 5 grocers, 2 leather merchants, 3 book sellers,2 leather merchants, the Calton Police Station, 1 baker, 1 shoemaker, 1 surgeon (!), 1 butcher, 3 confectioners, 1 slater , 3 provision merchants, 1 furniture shop, 2 eating places, 1 green grocer and 1 tabacconist
